In a significant move to enhance the overall airport experience, the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has unveiled its state-of-the-art self-baggage drop facility at Terminal 3 of the Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport. The introduction of this innovative system aims to streamline the baggage drop-off process and significantly reduce wait times for passengers, resulting in a seamless travel experience.

According to DIAL, the self-baggage drop facility has the capacity to cater to up to three passengers per minute, ensuring efficient handling of passenger luggage. The installation includes a total of 14 self-baggage drop machines, with 12 of them being fully automated and the remaining two being hybrid models, providing flexibility and convenience to travelers.

The introduction of the self-baggage drop (SBD) facility is projected to reduce the wait time for passengers by approximately 15 to 20 minutes. This reduction in waiting time is a significant improvement, enabling travelers to have more time for other essential tasks or to simply relax before their flight.

Currently, the facility is accessible to domestic passengers, and after obtaining the necessary approvals, it will also be made available to international passengers. DIAL expects several major airlines, including Air India, Vistara, Air France, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, and British Airways, to enable their passengers to utilize the self-baggage drop facility in the near future, further enhancing the convenience and efficiency of the airport.

Passengers can utilize the self-baggage drop facility through a simple two-step process. Initially, they generate their boarding passes and baggage tags at the Self Check-In kiosk. Subsequently, passengers tag their check-in baggage before proceeding to the SBD facility. At the facility, they need to scan their boarding pass, confirm that their luggage complies with the airline’s safety regulations, and load their baggage onto the designated belt.

Upon completion of the process, the self-baggage drop system automatically transfers the luggage to the sorting area, ensuring a smooth and secure transition to the aircraft. It is worth noting that if the weight of the check-in baggage exceeds the airline’s limit, the self-baggage drop machine will not accept it. In such cases, airline staff will be available near the facility to assist passengers and ensure a seamless experience.

Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, the CEO of DIAL, expressed his enthusiasm about the new facility, stating, “DIAL has been working relentlessly towards maximizing passenger experience at the Delhi airport through various digitization and automation initiatives.
